How to Perform Umrah
Umrah is a deeply spiritual and rewarding journey that every Muslim aspires to undertake. This guide provides a step-by-step process on how to perform Umrah, ensuring that you can complete this sacred act of worship with ease and devotion.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Preparation and Intention (Niyyah)
Ihram:
- Men: Wear two white, unstitched sheets of cloth.
- Women: Wear modest clothing that covers the entire body, except the face and hands.
- Niyyah: Make the intention for Umrah before crossing the Miqat, the designated boundary for Ihram.
2. Talbiyah
Recite the Talbiyah continuously:
“Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Shareeka Laka Labbayk, Innal Hamda Wan-Ni’mata Laka Wal Mulk, La Shareeka Lak.”
(Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.)
3. Tawaf
Circumambulate the Kaaba:
- Perform seven counter-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba.
- Start at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), if possible, and kiss or touch it. If not, point towards it.
- Recite prayers and supplications while walking.
4. Sa’i
Walking between Safa and Marwah:
- After completing Tawaf, proceed to the area between Safa and Marwah.
- Walk back and forth seven times, starting from Safa and ending at Marwah.
- Recite prayers and remember Allah throughout this ritual.
5. Hair Cutting/Shaving
- For men: Shave the head or trim the hair significantly.
- For women: Trim a small portion of hair, about an inch.
This act signifies the completion of Umrah and the release from the state of Ihram.
Tips for a Smooth Umrah
- Stay hydrated: The climate can be extremely hot, so drink plenty of water.
- Be patient and respectful: The holy sites can be very crowded.
- Stay connected: Keep in touch with your group or family to avoid getting lost.
- Follow local guidelines: Adhere to the rules and regulations of the Saudi authorities.
